Happy Gut=Happy Brain

Pretty interesting that Qigong uses the Lower Dan Tian, locates it in the area of the digestive organs below the belly button, and puts it in control of our physical energy. Qigong recognizes the Lower Dan Tian as a drug-free path to accomplish better energy, mood and health. Now it looks like there is science to back this up:

An article in ScienceNOW states researchers have discovered that eating a species of bacteria called Lactobacillus rhamnosus, which is found in certain yogurts, cheese, breads, and probiotic supplements, has a calming effect on mice. When scientists at University College Cork in Ireland fed rodents this bacteria in broth and then put them into a stress situation, the bacteria-fed creates seemed "more chilled out" than mice without it. This finding bolsters other recent evidence that our gut "microbiome" - the hundreds of species of bacteria that live in our bowels-has a major effect on our mood. The vagus nerve which connects our digestive organs to our brains appears to be the pathway for this communication. The author's study, John Cryan, says the next step is to see if scientists can use this vagus pathway to treat psychiatric disorders without drugs by targeting the gut. I guess they don't realize that Qigong figured this out centuries ago!

What a Busy Summer! So much Fun and Friendship

Oh my gosh! I can't believe how much has happened since the May Healing Arts Seminar. The Oldsmar Seminar was fantastic! So many enthusiastic students, we all had a great time. Two weeks later I flew to CT to do another seminar with my co-teacher Andi Borella and Grand Master Fu. We had a wonderful time and the weather was so nice, we did Wuji Gong outdoors under beautiful trees.

I had a few weeks to relax and catch my breath, then it was time for the next Emei Qigong class in our path of study and personal growth--Changing the Moving Program of Life. We had 7 students participate in this life changing class. Again, a great group of people, so delightful to spend time with and see them blossoming! Spending 6 intensive days together, we all got along well, learned a lot, and really developed a great bond. I think all of us were sad that the last day arrived and we would all go our separate ways.

Well, not for long. I was given a request to host an Emei Qigong 18 Methods class. Qigong Master Bob Arel and friend, Kempo Karate Master Mike Allen, traveled from DelRay Beach. We had a great weekend learning the next Qigong form in Emei. Like Wuji Gong, the 18 Methods form is designed for healing, but it requires balance and leg strength that may take time for some to develop. Fortunately, DVDs and books will help us continue our mastery of this form. We'll have Bob back next spring for another 18 Methods weekend, so stay tuned!
